The Beginning of American ComicsI am sure this is a topic a lot of you would be interested in! As with my article on the Beginning of Manga. I'm only going to touch on the root of it for now as I have other articles planned to tie them together! The American comic book, is really quite new in comparison with past narrative art forms. In fact we haven't had a century yet of the modern American comic as we know it.Let us begin by looking at The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck by Swiss artist Rudolphe Töpffer. It is considered to be the oldest known comic book and started in Europe and was printed in several languages all the way back in 1837, but it was reprinted in 1842 in New York, the first printed comic book in America. There were no word balloons as you would imagine comics today, however there was text in the book to describe what was going on. This was produced in a period of comic book histor

Not So Traditional Tuesdays #4My plan is to keep the features fresh for me(and you) and maybe open a few eyes to all the different kinds of artwork that is available while browsing the deviantArt galleries. The things that make one piece of art great applies, for the most part, to other genres. A painter can learn how light and shadow fall from photography, photo-manipulators can learn about composition from a great Manga drawing, and literature can give you the inspiration to try something new or take your work to the next step. You may never try all art forms you see! You can however take what you learn from them and incorporate that into your own work. It could be the difference between stagnating and that breakthrough every artist wants to find!**WARNING:Viewing these works of art may cause giddiness, elevated heart rates, and happiness in the pants(which could lead to blindness)! Traditional Tuesdays #41Hi, and welcome to the 41st edition of Traditional Tuesdays. This week, like all of the other weeks, I'll be featuring fifteen works of art from the Traditional Gallery. Any more than that might and you might loss interest or it could cause your monitor to fail in an explosion of awesomeness. I would feel guilty if that were to happen, so I'm keeping it at fifteen! The Traditional gallery is a vast storeroom of work that covers many mediums and genres. I've tried to show a diverse array of artwork, but I don't have room for them all. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!**WARNING:Viewing these works of art may cause giddiness, elevated heart rates, andhappiness in the pants(which could lead to blindness)! Famous Photographs: The Afghan GirlIf you run a google search on what are the top famous Photographs of all time, The Afghan Girl is sure to appear. She is truly a face from History and one that many across the globe have tried to capture within others time and time again. But what exactly has made this image and its photographer so captivating?Source: Daily Mail/National Geographic/Steve McCurryEyes, they say, are the window to the soul. And capturing such a piercing and expressive look in a photograph is a highly sought after skill. The Afghan Girl exhibits suspense, suspicion and a sense of distrust at the person behind the lens, she gives off an air of maturity, a foreboding feeling - a vulnerability behind years of strength. That, is what makes her so captivating.Sharbat Gula is her name, although few even know this rather important detail. Sh

Photography Fortnightly: Edition Forty EightPhotography Bi-Weekly Header created by ~TouchedD "Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I'm going to take tomorrow." ~ Imogen CunninghamI'm loving jars this month. I'm not sure why, other than the fact that I saw some set up at a craft fair that I had a table at, and I just fell in love with them. A couple of large jars with some fairy lights nestled in them - the effect was immense. It was so simple too! Sadly the people weren't actually selling the lights, but once I'd made a little profit on my sales, I went over clutching my ten pound note and picked out a few. So I was delighted to see that on Flipboard today, there was an article exploring 19 great photos of jars. If you're stuck for inspiration, grab a jam jar (take the jam out first maybe) and start shooting. Shoot things through them, around them, in them - get creative! Jars are awesome. General Ph
